Caravans in Abisko, Sweden

I spent last weekend cross-country skiing in the beautiful Snowy Mountains and, unusually for Australia, we ended up driving on an icy highway through bucketing snow. I was reminded of the nonchalant ease with which Scandinavian drivers handle icy roads. Here, it made news headlines when a few flakes of snow landed in Canberra last Sunday, and the roads to our snowfields seem to induce hysteria in drivers.

This photo is from 2006 when I was lucky enough to visit Sweden. Abisko is a long way north, well within the arctic circle. It was November when we were there and the sun never made it above the horizon; the day was reduced to gloaming from about 10 until 2. Scandinavia is fantastic.
