These trains carry coal from the west to the east, and Arthur’s Pass marks the top of their climb through the mountains. The track up is steep: there are five engines used to pull the cargo up from the West Coast, and at Arthur’s Pass Village three of the engines are retired, leaving only two to lead the train down the other side of the mountains and across the Canterbury Plains.
