Brooding watchfullness: ‘Eagle’, by Bruce Armstrong, Melbourne

This sculpture in Melbourne is lovely. It’s called Eagle, by Bruce Armstrong, and it is massive. Wedgetailed Eagles are a very important patriarchal totem for Aboriginal people in Australia. The Wurundjeri people know the eagle as Bunjil the ancestral creator spirit, who lives in the sky and “looks over the land and its people with his watchful eye”.

Incidentally, Google Maps has just introduced street view for nearly all of Australia. It’s very cool. You can see Eagle here.
