The many and varied dog symbols of Switzerland
Switzerland is a land of rules, and dogs are not exempt. To be on a train a dog must have a ticket, for example, although they are only charged half price. It's a balanced system, though, because as well as being under the control of these rules, dogs have more liberty than back home. I think I have previously mentioned that dogs are allowed in many unexpected places. For example, who would be crazy enough to take a dog into a butcher? The Swiss, that's who. Of course, as Spiderman taught us all, with great power comes great responsibility. The dogs here know it and are thus neat and serious in nature. Two dogs passing in the street walk by without even a passing glance, let alone the kind of frantic leering sniff-fest you might expect in raucous Australia. I wouldn't be surprised to see one sitting at a cafe reading Le Monde. This all being said, there are some restrictions on where dogs can wander. Because usually you'd expect your dog to be allowed anywhere, the restriction must be announced to the world, and often it is via a hilariously specific sign. Ever since noticing them I have taken a picture whenever I've seen a new kind, thus forming a small collection of Overly Specific Swiss No-Dog Signs. I present them to you now.
