A new type of helicopter seed

The trees that grow wild in Europe are the ones that only grow in city parks in Australia. This means that walking through an ordinary forest here is for me like walking through a giant, old park. Many of the trees I recognise, at least dimly, but the other day I was excited to notice a type of helicopter pod I'd never seen before. If you're not the kind of person to be excited by a new kind of helicopter seed, you'd probably best be moving on now.

The boring old kind.

That's the boring old kind of spinning pod that every man and his dog has seen before. Men and their dogs have seen them so often that dogs will just roll their eyes and look away when presented with one. I think they're from maple trees.

A new kind!

But behold this interesting new specimen! It's like a leaf, but cleverly arranged so that the weight of the two seeds causes it to spin as it falls. Nice huh? I have no idea what kind of tree it comes from, so until someone tells me what these pods are called I'm going to call them ball-dangling seed-spinners.

Update: It's from a small-leaved lime!
