Skiing in May in Zermatt

It's May and the snow is rapidly receding up the hillsides. Across the lake from Lausanne there are now only a few tiny white patches which are fast being eroded by the rain. The hills are a bright spring green with new growth. Tanya and I and some friends decided that one last ski was in order, so over the weekend we headed to Zermatt.

We totally hit the jackpot, and it snowed on Friday night then cleared up on Saturday. It was cloudy in Zermatt but as we took the telecabine up to the snow we broke through the clag, and it was grand beau - blue skies, sunshine, and the Matterhorn standing tall in all its iconic glory. There was an audible gasp in the gondola car. Here are some photos from a brilliant late-season ski.
