Lausanne in winter

Here's a collection pictures of Lausanne looking gorgeous in winter, starting with one of my favourite viewpoints of the city, from the Pont Bessières. That's the Cathedral de Saint-François on the right, and the city's fanciest shopping street — Rue de Bourg — runs through the middle of these buildings.

At the top of Rue de Bourg is the famous Étoile Blanche, home of the best burger in town and also this fantastic wall with bottle stickers.

Further west sits Flon, a nightclub district. Between Flon and Chauderon is an underground passage and lots of blockish concrete.

Of course you can't think about Lausanne without thinking about the lake and the mountains. The sunsets in winter can be particularly lovely from next to the lake at Ouchy.

EPFL, the university where I am doing my PhD, is to the west of the city. The other day it snowed and the campus got blanketed in white.

I love seeing the city in the snow. It's a challenge for the bus system, because the busses have to put on chains and their antennas that connect to the electricity lines fall off. But the rest of the city carries on just as normal — which is to say, pretty well indeed.
