Copenhagen
My mum is in Europe at the moment, and so is my brother Alex. Since Alex was already near Copenhagen we decided it was an ideal time to meet up for a weekend in Denmark. The trip started very well with beautiful views of Lac Léman, Lausanne and surrounds on the flight from Geneva.
As the plane cruised into Denmark, the giant Øresund Bridge appeared. We flew over it then hooked left to land in Copenhagen.
Copenhagen is a very beautiful city and decidedly more gritty than other Scandinavian places like Stockholm. There are loads of bikes everywhere and people seem relaxed and happy.
We wandered the city, past the canals and colourful buildings of Nyhavn, and to the harbour where a cool breeze blew off the sea. There is a bridge across the harbour that is unfinished, with a large gap between its two halves reaching towards each other. It looks from all angles like the two halves simply will not properly meet - and indeed it turns out it has opening and closing spans that won't close properly, although it sounds like it's a closer thing than it appears.
Most of the time we got around on bikes. Copenhagen has an excellent system of public electric (pedal-assist) bikes. They weigh about a metric tonne but scoot along very nicely under battery power, and they have touch-screens on the handlebars that come complete with satellite navigation!
The Danish design museum was great to visit, although you had to be very careful not to accidentally sit on one of the exhibits. Outside the museum there were plenty of interesting sculptures and lots of street art around the place.
We had an interesting food experience at the Kødbyens Fiskebar, where we followed the waitress' recommendation and had a meal of raw fish prepared in various different and interesting ways. It was wholly unexpected and incredible, and they gave us a tour of the kitchen afterwards which was a treat.
And just to finish this post on an amusing note - check out the incredible options you get on a Danish washing machine!
