Whales

One amazing thing about living in Sydney is the whale migration that occurs every year. It’s pretty special to be able to turn up to a headland in the Eastern Suburbs, scan the horizon, and have a reasonable chance of seeing a whale spout or a flipper appear.

A couple of weekends ago I took a trip on a whale watching boat — a huge, fast ferry that powered out of the harbour and into the swell of the open ocean. We saw two humpback whales who were just cruising along, probably relaxing after putting up with stormy seas for the week before. It was great to see them on their way north and I’ll keep an eye out for them as they return south later in the year.

The turquoise area here is a whale just under the surface.

Looking back to the city.
